If you have never booked a massage, the menu can be confusing. Swedish and deep tissue are the two names you will see most. Both are valuable, but they feel different and suit different needs.
Swedish massage
- Pressure: Light to medium, with long, flowing strokes.
- Best for: General relaxation, stress, first-timers and anyone who prefers a gentle touch.
- Feel: Calming and smooth. Most people find it easy to drift off.
Deep tissue massage
- Pressure: Firmer, with slower strokes that work into deeper muscle layers.
- Best for: Stubborn tightness in the back, neck and shoulders, or muscles that feel knotted from sport or long hours at a desk.
- Feel: Intense in places. You may feel some tenderness during or after, but it should never be sharp or unbearable. Tell your therapist if it is too much.
Which should you choose?
- Want to unwind after a long week? Start with Swedish.
- Dealing with tight shoulders or a stiff back? Consider deep tissue, or a mix: relaxation first, with firmer work on problem areas.
- Not sure? Tell your therapist how you feel and what pressure you like. They can adjust as they go.
Tell your therapist before you begin
Mention pregnancy, recent surgery, injuries, blood clots, skin conditions, medication that thins the blood, or anything else your doctor has advised you about. Some conditions need your doctor's approval first.
