One of the best things about a home massage is that you do not have to travel. A little preparation helps you get the most out of it.
Before your therapist arrives
- Pick a quiet space. A bedroom or a cleared corner of your living room works well, with enough room for a massage bed or mat and a person to move around it.
- Keep the room comfortably warm. You will be partly undressed under a towel, so avoid a room that is too cold.
- Dim the lights and silence your phone. Soft lighting and calm music help you switch off.
- Clear a path. Make sure the entrance, gate or estate security is arranged so your therapist can arrive without delay.
- Eat lightly. Avoid a heavy meal in the hour before your session.
What to tell your therapist
- The areas that feel tight or sore, and any you would like avoided.
- Your preferred pressure: light, medium or firm.
- Any injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy, skin conditions or allergies (for example to oils).
During the session
- Speak up if the pressure is too strong or too light, or if the room is too warm or cold.
- Breathe slowly and let your muscles go loose.
Afterwards
- Drink water and take it easy for a little while.
- Mild tenderness after firmer work is common, but sharp or lasting pain is not. Contact a doctor if it worries you.
